ROOT CANAL

ROOT CANAL AN OVERVIEW

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat a root canal infection. The procedure is minimally invasive and aims to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible. Dr. Overholtzer commonly recommends root canals for patients to avoid unnecessary tooth extractions, even in larger back teeth or molars. Root canals can stabilize your dental health and avoid the spread of decay and infection to adjacent healthy tissue.

It is a common myth that the root canal procedure is painful. However, it is most commonly the infection of the root pulp itself that causes a patient’s discomfort. Once the root canal procedure is complete, most patients experience relief from painful symptoms.

WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL?

A root canal is a treatment designed to remove infected tooth pulp and restore the healthy tooth. Infected tooth pulp can become inflamed and cause the tooth to be sensitive or even painful. The procedure removes this decayed pulp and clears the tooth of any bacteria.

Dr. Overholtzer uses advanced technology to evaluate your condition and accurately plan your treatment for the best possible result. Using 3-D imaging, we can identify the location of decay and infection within the tooth and look for other areas of concern that are not visible with a traditional x-ray.

MOLAR ROOT CANALS IN BISHOP, CA

When a larger back tooth or molar has become infected or significantly damaged, Dr. Overholtzer may be able to save the natural tooth with a root canal. He is one of few Bishop area dentists who routinely perform these types of root canals. His experience and expertise in endodontic treatment benefits patients and is the foundation for a successful and stable outcome.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, jaw pain or discomfort, it is important to schedule a visit with Dr. Overholtzer as soon as possible. Early intervention can often mean that more conservative dental treatments will be effective and minimizes the possibility of progressive disease and damage to the teeth and gums.

ROOT CANAL WHAT TO EXPECT

The root canal procedure is a routine endodontic treatment that is typically completed in a single visit to our Bishop, CA dentist office. Dr. Overholtzer is a leading local dentist for root canal therapy, offering endodontic treatment for all teeth including molars. In addition to saving the natural tooth, a root canal preserves the natural structure of your bite.

To begin the procedure, patients will receive a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once comfortable, Dr. Overholtzer will create a small hole in the top of the tooth. Through this hole, Dr. Overholtzer will remove all decayed tissue. The tooth is cleaned and filled with a biocompatible material called Gutta Percha. The tooth is carefully sealed to prevent infection.

CEREC SAME DENTAL CROWNS

In most root canal procedures, it is recommended that a dental crown is placed to strengthen the tooth and minimize the risk of future damage or decay. Using CEREC in-office CAD/CAM technology, Dr. Overholtzer is able to design and fit a custom dental crown on the same day as your root canal. Once the procedure is complete, Dr. Overholtzer will use digital images of the tooth to design a custom dental crown. The dental crown will be fabricated while you wait comfortably in our office. The dental crown is then bonded to the tooth for a comfortable, natural fit.
